Leader of the Opposition in the Senate says that the search and seizure against the congressman suspected of involvement in the 8th of January has legal weaknesses
The leader of the Opposition in the Senate, Rogério Marinho (PL-RN), criticized this Monday (5.Feb.2024) the search and seizure against the federal deputy Carlos Jordy (PL-RJ), leader of the Opposition in the Chamber. The congressman was the target of a PF (Federal Police) operation and is accused of keeping “strong connection” with one of the organizers of January 8th.
“I am called a leader even by government senators, any conversation that was intercepted on my phone would probably be the target of a search”said Marinho in an interview with the “Roda Viva” program on TV Cultura.
Marinho's statement refers to exchanges of messages between the federal deputy and a city councilor substitute for Campos dos Goytacazes City Council (RJ) and public servant of the Legislative Assembly of the State of Rio de Janeiro, arrested on suspicion of financing the transport of extremists to Brasília on the eve of January 8th. The conversation is cited in a document from the PGR (Attorney General's Office) on which the PF (Federal Police) operation was based.
The PF's investigative line sees signs of a possible command relationship between Carlos Jordy and the based councilor, who called the deputy “my leader” and asks the deputy for instructions, saying that he has the “power to stop everything”. On the same date, the first roadblocks across the country were mobilized. Here's the complete of the document (PDF – 3.7 MB).
For the senator, the episode with congressman Jordy demonstrated that there is “weaknesses” in the investigation process. Marinho said that the opposition suffers “persecution” and that there is a “symbolism” in the situation, since the deputy is leader in the Lower House.
