Colombian golfer María José Marín received another great distinction in a rising career: She was confirmed in the field to play the US Women's Amateur, one of the 'Majors' of world amateur golf.
The 124th edition of the tournament will be held August 5-11 at the Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Oklahoma (United States).
Marín, 17 years old, achieved the quota thanks to her position in the amateur world ranking: she is in box 14. The top 20 in that table automatically enter the tournament.
2024 has been a great year for Marín: it began with victory in the South American Amateur that was played at the Country Club of Bogotá and a couple of weeks ago she finished second in the Mountain View Collegiate.
A member of the Razorbacks, the University of Arkansas golf team, Marín achieved an unprecedented feat for that squad, after having been selected as the player of the week on four occasions.
He was also part of the team that has won for Colombia the last three editions of the South American Senior Golf Championship, Copa Andes (2021, 2022 and 2023) and achieved triumphs last year such as the Colombian Open and the Nico Open.
Colombia, for the second crown
Marín, who also has her return assured to the Augusta National Women's Amateur, where she finished in the Top 15 last year, seeks to become the second Colombian player to win the US Women's Amateur.
In 2007, María José Uribe from Santander won the victory by defeating the American Amanda Bluumenherst in the final. It was the definitive launch of Mariajo's career, which took her to the LPGA. She is the only Latin American to have won the tournament.
Colombia also had Marisa Baena as a finalist in 1996: she lost the title against the American Kelli Kuehne,
