The image of Argentine legend Diego Maradona will be on the shirts of Napoli players in his next three matches in the Italian Football League, in commemoration of the first anniversary of the departure of the 1986 World Cup champion on November 25, 2020, according to what the southern club announced.
The league leader published in his accounts on social media a copy of the shirt that his players will wear in his next three matches in “Serie A” against Verona on Sunday, Inter Milan, the defending champion, on the current 21 and Lazio on the 28th, with a large picture of the legend in the lower front half of the shirt.
“One year after his death, Napoli honors a great hero, a symbol of an era and an icon of world football,” the club wrote on its official website.
Napoli owes Maradona the only two titles he won in the Italian league in 1987 and 1990, and the Argentine was named after his stadium after his death.
Maradona, who was suffering from kidney and liver problems, heart failure, nervous deterioration and addiction to alcohol and drugs, died of a heart attack on November 25, 2020 at the age of sixty, two weeks after he underwent surgery for a hematoma in the head.
The shirt will be sold in three different colors, with 1,926 shirts of each colour, in reference to the year Naples was founded in 1926.
The club said that part of the proceeds will be used for charitable initiatives.
Maradona wore the colors of Naples between 1984 and 1991, and became so adored by the residents of the southern city that none of the players who came to the team after his departure from him, did not wear the No. 10 shirt that Napoli finally withdrew in 2000 in honor of the legend.
