Two people reported symptoms of poisoning. The product should not be consumed even if frozen. How to distinguish the leaves of the two plants
The Ministry of Health recalled as a precaution the lot production number 273 of spinach “Il Gigante” sold in a bag of 500 grams per suspected mandrake contamination. Spinach is produced by the Spinerb company of Colleoni Andrea e C snc based in Gorlago, in the province of Bergamo. The bags of spinach have an expiration date of 7 October, however the product can be frozen and for this reason the ministry warns that, even if frozen, the product should not be consumed and must be returned to the store.
The provision is linked to theRasff alert 2022.5877, notified by Italy on suspicion of mandrake contamination in fresh-cut spinach. According to the Rasff notification, the suspected mandrake contamination would have caused the appearance of symptoms of poisoning from parasympatholytics (anticholinergics and antimuscarinics) and spasmolytics in two people. There mandrake can easily be confused with spinach for its appearance (HERE how to recognize them)
In recent days in the province of Naples a dozen people from different families have felt ill after ingesting mandrake leaves mistaken for spinach: they accused hallucinations, intestinal problems, intense pains enough to require hospitalization. The person in the most serious condition would have consumed one spinach omelette. In this case it was vegetables sold loose, not wrapped. The investigations by the Carabinieri and ASL Napoli 2 Nord led to the identification of the potentially contaminated goods, also tracing back to the manufacturer, an Abruzzo company. Laboratory analyzes are still underway on biological samples taken from patients and products to confirm whether or not it is mandrake poisoning.
