BRASILIA (Reuters) – Former Health Minister Henrique Mandetta said on Thursday that he could still run for president in next year’s election, shortly after PSL president Luciano Bivar said Mandetta had given up on your application.
“I always said that I can be a candidate or I can support another candidate. But I will never give up on Brazil”, wrote Mandetta on his Twitter account. “My name is still available. The DEM/PSL merger will mature.”
Earlier, in conversation with Reuters, the president of the PSL told Reuters that Mandetta had withdrawn his candidacy at a meeting of the party’s summit this week, and would be running for the senate or federal deputy for Mato Grosso do Sul.
DEM and PSL decided to merge to form União Brasil, but the new legend has not yet been implemented. Mandetta belongs in the DEM.
According to Bivar, the presentation of a proper name to run for the presidency would not be ruled out, but the deputy stated that the withdrawal of Mandetta’s candidacy would open space for the support of some other name in the so-called third way.
The party is planning talks with Podemos, which launched former minister Sérgio Moro as a candidate; the PSDB, which still needs to define whether João Doria or Eduardo Leite will be the toucan candidate; and with the MDB, which will formally release Senator Simone Tebet in early December.
The PSL president said he has yet to speak with Moro or any of the other parties, but he confirmed that alliances are possible as long as there is “programmatic alignment” and a space commensurate with the size of the party.
“Any alliance that União Brasil enters will be to occupy a leading role,” he said.
After the merger between the two parties, even with the possible defection of at least 20 Pocketnarista parliamentarians who should change the PSL for the PL, União Brasil will have the largest bench in the Chamber, the largest electoral fund and the longest TV and radio time for the campaign — a force coveted, especially, by Moro who, at Podemos, has little media space and few campaign resources.
Despite Bivar denying contacts and Mandetta saying he could still be a candidate, the vice president of the PSL, deputy Junior Bozella (SP), confirmed that he has been trying to get closer to Moro and has been talking within the party about the feasibility of an alliance with the We can. Last Wednesday, Bozella organized a dinner between deputies from the non-pollenist PSL and Moro.
“I don’t see a candidate emerging in the coming months outside the polarization that has a greater electoral density and that can remove Bolsonaro from the second round, which for me is the main one”, said the deputy. “If another one appears in the meantime, it’s okay, Moro can enter as deputy. But I don’t see.”
União Brasil itself had three initial names: the president of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco, who ended up leaving the DEM for the PSD; José Luiz Datena, who intends to join the same party, and Mandetta, who announced the withdrawal of his name.
“Mandetta had already indicated what he would do by going to Moro’s membership of Podemos. I think his posture is intelligent”, said Bozella.
