Man posed as an ‘angeologist’ and abused women in Antioquia, Colombia

Colombia.- Local authorities have arrested a 35-year-old man, identified as Juan Diego Hincapié Metaute, accused of sexually abusing at least four women in Antioch. Posing as an “angeologist”the subject deceived his victims by offering them spiritual cleansing services to free them from supposed evils.

According to the Attorney General’s Office, the man convinced his victims that he had powers to perform spiritual cleansing. Taking advantage of his false title of “angeologist”assured them that they could be bewitched or suffer from sexually transmitted diseases, using these pretexts to perform healing rituals on them and, subsequently, abuse them.

The defendant’s modus operandi included visiting the homes of his victims, where he charged them between 700,000 and 900,000 Colombian pesos for his alleged spiritual services before committing the abuse. The events would have occurred between January and December 2023 in the Zamora neighborhoods of the municipality of Bello and Belén, Villa Hermosa and Campo Valdés in Medellín.

Hincapié Metaute has been linked in at least four cases and was charged with the crime of carnal access or sexual act in person placed in aggravated incapacity to resist. However, the accused did not accept the charges.

Authorities continue to investigate the case, urging additional potential victims to come forward and report. This event underscores the need for greater vigilance and education about the legitimacy of those offering spiritual services, to prevent unscrupulous people from taking advantage of people’s vulnerability and faith.
