Mama Coco exists in real life: she is 108 years old and lives in Mexico

Surely you remember the famous Pixar movie ‘Coco’. Released in 2017, This tape pays homage to the traditional day of the dead that is celebrated in Mexico in November.

Miguel, Ernesto de la Cruz or Héctor became memorable characters in the film. But without a doubt, Mama Coco, Miguel’s great-grandmother, is perhaps the most memorable character and one of the most important for the development of the story.

And even if you don’t believe it, Mama Coco exists in real life. This is María Salud Ramírez Caballero, a 108-year-old grandmother whose life changed after discovering her resemblance to the character in the film.

María Salud, according to local media reports, resides in a town called Santa Fe de la Laguna, located in Michoacán, Mexico.

The woman was born on September 16, 1913 and dedicated herself to living a quiet family life in her town.

Comparison with Mama Coco

However, the life of this grandmother who is now 108 years old changed in 2017 after the premiere of the film inspired by her country.

According to the Culture Collective medium, at first the resemblance to the character in the film had only been noticed by his closest relatives. But the woman rose to fame just like the movie when a tourist who visited the area shared an image of her on social media.

With the photograph, which went viral on networks, María Salud became the real-life Mama Coco.

However, although this woman and the character have an undeniable resemblance, and although the film is a nod to Mexican culture, the similarity ended up being purely coincidental.

This is because the directors of the film denied that Mama Coco was inspired by someone from reality.

This is not a true story. The character of ‘Mamá Coco’ was not based on any real person we met on our travels. She emerged solely from our imagination,” said Lee Unkric, director of the film, through his Twitter account.

But now, the visit to her house on the Zacapu-Morelia road has become an obligatory stop for hundreds of tourists and locals who want to meet “Mamá Coco” in person.

That fame has allowed her to see hundreds of visitors who come to meet her and, from time to time, leave her some money in return.

The woman celebrated her 108 years of life in style in September 2021. She did so with a publication on her social networks, in which she received more than two thousand likes and hundreds of congratulatory comments.
