Carmen CaseroCouncilor for Urban Planning of Malaga, announced this Wednesday the prohibition of registering tourist apartments in 43 neighborhoods of Malagain which eight out of every 100 homes – at least – are dedicated to the tourism sector. This measure is expected to come into force in month of novemberafter passing through the Municipal Plenary next Wednesday October 30.
The councilor explained that, for this new ban, the first step taken at the beginning of the year has been essential. The Andalusian Government published a decree in which it gave the responsibility to city councils to limit or prohibit the creation of tourist homes.
According to the Junta de Andalucía, Málaga has almost 13,000 tourist homesat the moment. Since then, the City Council has requested the denial of 1,500 licenses approximately, that they did not meet the new requirements.
The limitation “it arrives late and is only a painkiller”
The spokesperson for Con Málaga, Toni Morillashas opined that the measure “arrives late and is only a soothing that does not resolve the housing emergency in Malaga, at the current point what What needs to be addressed is how a good part of the existing licenses are reverted“, according to Europa Press.
Morillas has wondered “Why has it taken so long from the PP government team? when we have spent years not only from our group, but also from the neighborhood associations, especially the one in the Center, making proposals to stop the plague of tourist homes in Malaga and the Popular Party has so far refused.”
“What they bring now is a painkiller, since does not solve the emergency situation. At the point where Malaga is saturated with tourist housing, the solution is not only to not give more licenses in certain neighborhoods, what must be addressed is how a good part of the existing licenses are reverted“Morillas insisted in a statement.
Likewise, the spokesperson for the left-wing coalition has assured that “if only action is taken on the neighborhoods that are currently saturated, the risk of speculative pressure spreading to other neighborhoods is going to be much larger, so, on the part of our group, we are going to study the proposal in depth and we will make contributions and amendments aimed at guarantee that the plague of tourist housing is effectively stopped throughout the city of Malaga”, he concluded.
Citizens at the forefront of problems generated by politicians
The president of the Association of Tourist Housing and Apartment Professionals of Andalusia, John Cubehas declared at COPE that “we are once again putting citizens at the forefront of solving problems that our politicians have generatedthe administrations, due to a lack of housing planning for decades”, after the announcement of the new measure.
He Tenants Union promoted a demonstration in Malaga last June, in which Approximately 15,000 people took to the streets with the motto “Malaga to live, not to survive”. The same union has called for a new demonstration for next November 9.
