Sora was the most complicated of all, as Disney and Square Enix weren’t happy with Nintendo’s ideas.
Now that Sora is available in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, the long trail of DLC characters that slowly arrived in the game has finally been completed. Masahiro Sakurai, director of the title, can now dedicate his life to other things, but not before revealing how difficult it was to develop the additional 11 fighters.
Of all the characters, Sora was the one who presented the most complications. The news came in the most recent column of Famitsu from the director of Smash, translated by SIliconera. According to Sakurai, developing all of the Smash DLC took the team almost as long as making a new game from scratch. Somewhat understandable, taking into account licenses involved in all these fighters.
Of all the characters, Sora it was the one that presented the most complications. Both Disney and Square Enix were slow to agree with Nintendo’s ideas, rejecting the original design of the protagonist of Kingdom Hearts that the big N presented to the 2 companies.
The acceptance process was so difficult, Nintendo planned Fighters Pass 2 with 5 characters only, the same amount as the first wave of DLC. Pleasing Disney and Square Enix was more difficult than Sakurai thought, and the journey began when Sora came in first place within the Smash ballot, the character poll conducted in the days of Smash Bros. for Wii U.
What’s next for the director of Smash? Concluding the interview, Sakurai mentioned that he will only be working on a few more games (unspecified), and is a bit worried about the future.
