The arrest of Gioacchino Gammino, a fugitive for 20 years. Framed by Google Maps
Mafia, superflatant Gammino stopped after 20 years: framed by a photo of Google Maps. Now the life sentence
The Palermo prosecutor’s office has put an end to the inaction, which lasted about twenty years, of Gioacchino Gammino, Agrigento boss of the “Stidda“, Sentenced to life imprisonment and prejudiced for mafia-type association, murder and association aimed at illicit drug trafficking. The men of the Dia, coordinated by the prosecutor of Palermo Francesco Lo You, who will soon settle in Rome, and by the adjunct Paolo Guido, were on his trail since June 26, 2002, when he escaped from Rebibbia prison. The boss had been arrested for the first time in 1984 as part of a proceeding that will lead to the first maxi trial of the Cosa Nostra in Palermo. At the time he was investigated by the investigating judge Giovanni Falcone.
The super-fluttering was found thanks to Google Maps. It all started with a shot that portrayed the long avenue Avenida de los Voluntarios from Galapagar, Spanish municipality of almost 26 thousand inhabitants near Madrid. In the photo you can see a fruit and vegetable shop, “El huerto de Manu” and in front of the entrance two men chatting. One of which struck the investigators for the striking resemblance to Gammino.
Since that shop has been closed, however, the investigation moves to a nearby restaurant, “La cocina di Manu”, through a telephone contact, reports Republic. Closed in 2014, however, the restaurant still has the facebook page active. It is on this that Gioacchino Gambino, aka chef Manuel, is traced among the photos. Although the face has aged, the 61-year-old from Campobello di Licata he still has a scar on the left side of his chin.
“How did you find me? For ten years I hadn’t phoned my family anymore,” Gambino said when he was arrested on December 17. Now he is expected in Italy to serve life imprisonment. He is considered one of the members of the commando who on 29 August 1989 in Campobello di Licata murdered a passerby by mistake, as part of the bloody feud between Cosa Nostra and the Stidda, “rebel mafia” widespread in the Agrigento area but also in the provinces of Trapani and Caltanissetta.
