The forces of Nicolás Maduro’s regime ended their siege on Sunday (8) against the Argentine embassy in Caracas, which is under Brazilian custody, according to information from the Argentine newspaper Clarion, published by the Venezuelan portal Cocuyo effect.
The embassy building in Venezuela has been under siege by Chavista forces since Friday night (6), when the power supply to the site was also interrupted.
The occupants of the building informed the Clarion this Sunday that the agents of the Chavista intelligence service had left the place and that the power supply had been restored. The action occurred shortly after the opposition leader Edmundo González Urrutia left Venezuela for Spain, where he is expected to take refuge after suffering persecution.
Maduro had revoked Brazil’s custody of the Argentine embassy, which had its diplomats expelled from Caracas, for harboring opposition members of María Corina Machado’s party who, according to him, were using the site to plan “terrorist attacks.” The Chavista regime did not present evidence for its allegations.
The measure was rejected by the president of Argentina, Javier Milei, who was responsible for granting refuge to the six opponents who are currently in the building.
“Any attempt to invade or kidnap asylum seekers staying in our official residence will be harshly condemned by the international community. Actions like these reinforce the conviction that fundamental human rights are not respected in Maduro’s Venezuela,” warned a statement released by the Argentine Foreign Ministry on Saturday.
In a note to the portal G1 This Saturday, Itamaraty had said that Brazil’s priority was to guarantee the safety of those sheltered in the embassy and that the site would continue to be under Brazilian responsibility.
“Brazil continues to represent Argentina’s interests. If Venezuela wants to revoke its authorization, it will have to wait for a replacement country to be defined. In the meantime, we continue to assume this responsibility,” the statement said.
The Venezuelan regime’s harassment of the embassy had also been criticized by Uruguay, Chile and Paraguay.
