Elisabeth Borne’s request has been denied so that “the Government continues with its task” while the parliamentary panorama after the elections is clarified
The Prime Minister of France, Elisabeth Borne, has submitted her resignation to the president, Emmanuel Macron, who has however rejected it with the aim that “the Government continue with its task” while the parliamentary panorama is clarified after the elections.
Macron has been left without an absolute majority in the National Assembly, which in the best of cases forces him to agree with external political forces if he wants to carry out some of the reforms he promised before the presidential ones.
Borne has responded to this new panorama by putting his resignation letter on Macron’s table, according to the Elysee, which has pointed out that Macron now wants to contact the heads of the different parties in search of “constructive solutions”, reports the French public television .
The side loyal to Macron obtained 245 seats and, a priori, it will be difficult to convince other parties to allow it to exceed the threshold of 289, which marks an absolute majority. With no other solutions in sight, France fears political paralysis just two months after Macron renewed his mandate at the Elysee.
Borne stressed on the same election night that “there is no alternative” to the current majority, since the coalition led by the leftist Jean-Luc Mélenchon does not add enough support either. Sources quoted by Franceinfo have affirmed that, with this scenario, the future of the prime minister seems uncertain.
Thus, Macron would have withheld his resignation at least to buy time and be able to propose different scenarios in the round of contacts with the parties, although it is not clear that this temporary solution is enough. Borne plans to meet this Tuesday with all the members of his government.
One of the options that gains strength in the event of a paralysis is for Macron to hastily dissolve the National Assembly and call early elections, a risky bet considering the current political polarization, with a left and an extreme right on the rise.
