PARIS (Reuters) – French President Emmanuel Macron’s lead over rival candidates ahead of next month’s elections widened after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, according to a survey published by the daily Le Monde on Saturday.
The poll by the company Sopra Steria indicated that Macron would have 30.5% of the vote in the first round of the April 10 elections, up from 26.5% the previous week.
His closest rival in the first round would be Marine Le Pen of the far-right National Rally party, with 14.5% of the vote, up from 15.5% last week.
In the second round, scheduled for April 24, Macron would beat Le Pen by 59% to 41%.
Macron has spearheaded European efforts to try to ease the crisis in Ukraine. He met Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow last month and spoke with US President Joe Biden to try to broker the talks.
