French President Emmanuel Macron accused Iran on Monday (15) of carrying out “a disproportionate attack” against Israel, while confirming that French forces participated in the interception of Iranian missiles and drones.
“For the first time, Iran decided to send missiles from its soil to Israel. It's dangerous, they decided to attack in an unprecedented way. We have to support Israel, but ask for proportionality in the response,” said the president in an interview with the channel BFMTV.
Macron added that the attack was a response “to an Israeli action against an Iranian diplomatic headquarters in Damascus”, but considered it “disproportionate”.
According to the president, French planes took off from their base in Jordan on Saturday night (13) at the request of the Jordanian government and “intercepted” several projectiles, without giving further details.
He noted that the French intervention, which occurred due to the violation of Jordanian airspace, was done in coordination with the United States and the United Kingdom.
The French president considered that Israel has the right to defend itself and said it must find a way to do so in a proportionate way. In this sense, he proposed that the country carry out “bombardments on military interests [iranianos] in a calibrated way to put an end to this situation”.
Macron, who on Sunday (14) participated in a telematic meeting of G7 leaders, will speak later in the day with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who will once again ask for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
“Israel can fight terrorism, but it is a democracy and must do so in a proportionate way”, analyzed the French president, highlighting that France's intervention to intercept Iranian projectiles shows that it is “a reliable partner”.
Macron also celebrated the change of position of the United States, which “called for a truce later” but “is now doing it”, and emphasized the country's important role in “containing Iran with sanctions that limit its access to nuclear weapons or to the production of missiles and drones, which they also sell to Russia to attack Ukraine”.
