the former president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (EN) said this Monday (26.Sep.2022) that the vote itself for the Presidency of the Republic is a way to unify the country and restore peace. He stated that the 2022 election is “the most important thing in our life” and highlighted the importance, in his assessment, of winning in the 1st round of the election, on October 2nd.
“We are 6 days away from the most important election of our lives, an election that could end the war that has gripped this country since the arrival of the current president, which has divided families. This needs to end, the sooner the better.”said.
He urged his supporters to work on the final stretch of the campaign to “win the vote of all those who love democracy”.
“On October 2, you are the most important person in this country. It is you who will decide not just your future, but the future of 215 million men, women and children.”said.
Lula participated in an event with artists, influencers, intellectuals and politicians that lasted more than 4 hours and was held in the Celso Furtado auditorium, in Anhembi, in São Paulo. The meeting was called “super live” because it was rebroadcast on various social networks, both from the campaign and from supporters. Singers like Daniela Mercury sang songs from the PT campaign. Others spoke and praised public policies developed in Lula’s 2 previous terms.
The event had as its motto the appeal for victory in the 1st round of the presidential elections and for people to attend the polls, especially those who are no longer obliged to vote, such as young people between 16 and 18 years old and the elderly over 70 years old.
“It is not turning into a vote, that turning into a vote is when we are behind and we are in front. It’s about getting more votes. Go out by word of mouth”, said influencer Muka, one of the presenters. “Work with the undecided, with those who are in doubt. With those who want to annul vote in protest. It’s not the time for that. We will not take a chance”added actress Thalma de Freitas, who also presented the event.
At the beginning of his speech, Lula said that he was getting very emotional lately, even with scenes from the Rede Globo Pantanal soap opera. “In the soap opera I cried when Juma had a child, when the Velho do Rio was shot.”, said. He also stated that if he was going to reciprocate the gesture of everyone who attended the event, “would certainly defeat Fidel Castro in the number of hours he spoke. Nonot with his competence, his quality, but my hoarseness”.
PT also said that he is taking care of his voice to reduce hoarseness, which was accentuated during the electoral campaign, and promised that he will take better care of himself.
“We are not 2 countries divided by an insurmountable wall of concrete and intolerance. We are one country, one great nation. We speak the same language, we are characters of the same story, we love the same land, the same flag and the same green and yellow, which do not belong to this or that candidate, but to the entirety of the Brazilian people.”said Lula.
The former president also said that the country will rewrite its history if he is elected and blamed President Jair Bolsonaro (PL), his main opponent, for the return of hunger, unemployment, inflation, the destruction of public policies, the indebtedness of families and political violence.
“All this suffering caused by the current government is part of one of the most unhappy pages in our history”said.
He also classified Bolsonaro as “incompetent and inhuman” and said he “don’t know how to govern.
The PT candidate cited as an example of union his alliance with former governor Geraldo Alckmin (PSB), who had already faced him in the 2006 presidential election.
“The truth is that Alckmin and I were never enemies. We were adversaries, and one day we sat down to talk, put our differences on the table, and came to the conclusion that we should unite in the name of a much greater cause: the pacification and reconstruction of Brazil”said.
Lula also highlighted the broad political alliance he managed to build around his name, with 10 parties in the coalition (PT, PV, PC do B, Psol, Rede, PSB, Solidariedade, PROS, Avante and Agir) and several public figures declaring their support to him.
“Never before in the history of this country so many […] came together in the 1st round of an election, to say: enough with so much hatred, so much destruction, so many lies, so much suffering and so many deaths”said.
Shortly before Lula, Alckmin quoted slogans from other Lula campaigns. “If the first time he was elected President of the Republic, in 2002, hope conquered fear, now hope will conquer hatred”said.
Sociologist Rosângela da Silva, known as Janja, Lula’s wife, said that this is a time for conversation and reconciliation between those who fought over politics.
“Now is the time for us to talk to the neighbor that we fought because of 2018, time to sit down and talk, go back to the family ‘zap’ and say ‘and then, let’s try to talk a little’”said.
During the presentation, PT president Gleisi Hoffmann explained the PT campaign strategy for the final stretch of the campaign. She appealed to Lula’s supporters to convince other voters to go to the polls.
“The vote is our weapon, not the pistols that [Jair] Bolsonaro wants to deliver to the population. […] We need to win people over and say that if they don’t vote, someone else decides for them. There are still a lot of undecided people.”said.
“There are a large number of people who abstain from elections. Either because they don’t see the importance of voting or because they can’t vote. We have to talk to these people. […] Urn is not a place of protest, it is a place of choice”said.
The singer Pabllo Vittar said that the Lula government changed its history because his family received Bolsa Família”when you needed it most”. “Mr President, if you are listening to me, know that I love you very much and it was through you that I became one of the greatest artists in this country.”said.
Actress Mônica Martelli said that this year’s elections define the “our existence as a woman”. He also said that he represented at the event the advances that women had made in PT governments.
“We women want to be cared for through public policies. The Bolsa Família card with the woman’s name was a feminist revolution in the interior of this country”, said. She also said that her daughter turned 13 this year and she was “very happy to put candle 13 on the cake”.
During his participation in the event, councilor Eduardo Suplicy (PT-SP) said he bought cachaça from the MST (Landless Movement) to send to Pope Francis.
The PT was with the head of the Catholic Church last week. When leaving for Italy, on September 20, Suplicy published part of the content of the document on his social networks, in which it is possible to read “We have all the risks of an eventual 2nd round and then the need, in case of victory, to secure our possession”.
At the meeting, Suplicy handed over her book “Citizen’s Basic Income”. Upon receiving the gift, the Pope asked: “I brought the book, but I didn’t bring the cachaça?”.
Singer Martinho da Vila said he was always against mandatory voting, but decided to vote this year, even though he is no longer obliged because of his age, to vote for Lula. “He was a great president.”said.
Lula watched the event from a kind of box. Next to her were Geraldo Alckmin (PSB), candidate for vice on the PT ticket, his wife, Lu Alckmin, Márcio França (PSB), candidate for the Senate, and former president Dilma Rousseff (PT).
At the beginning of the event, Dilma was applauded by the guests, who even chanted “Dilma, warrior, of the Brazilian homeland”.
