Nobody would have imagined a quarter of a century ago that a simple technical demo, the one in which Luigi entered a haunted mansion to rescue his brother Mario, would end up becoming one of Nintendo’s most established franchises. That demonstration video was based on an idea as crazy as turning horror, so fashionable in video games in the late 90s, into a grotesque comedy with ghosts and a hero who faced his fears with a vacuum cleaner.
Today, almost twenty-five years later, that formula, that of Luigi’s Mansionit still works as well as the first day.
Horror for the whole family
More than jumps, shocks
Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD is the new iteration of that brilliant idea that put Super Mario’s brother in the leading role and that proposes an adventure without jumps, but with some surprises. In fact, in this case it is not an unprecedented adventure, since the game that arrives this week on Nintendo Switch is, in reality, a high definition update of the same Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon which came out in 2013 for the Nintendo 3DS handheld console.
Another remastering? Indeed, a new update of a game that is a few years old, but with adjustments and tweaks here and there. Since the recent Paper Mario until Metroid Primethe Kyoto company has been re-releasing old games on its popular console for quite some time, surely because a large part of its internal teams are already working on the titles of its next console, the successor to the Nintendo Switch, which is expected to be presented during the coming months. It is a remastering, but as with other cultural media, this type of reissues are also a way of highlighting great works, and this sequel to the Luigi’s Mansion original, without a doubt, it is.
One vacuum cleaner to catch them all
A “Ghostbusters” named Luigi
The plot of the game is the least of it, but it is a starting point. It turns out that King Boo, the king of ghosts in Mario’s world, has destroyed the Moon and made the rest of the ghosts turn evil. Luigi’s mission is to gather the fragments and to do so he must thoroughly explore up to five mansions full of rooms, secrets, traps and, of course, ghosts of all kinds. To achieve this, he has the help of Professor Fesor, a scientist who provides the hero with all kinds of gadgets, from a vacuum cleaner to school backpacks. The Ghostbusters even an intercom shaped like a Nintendo DS.
The main novelty of this remastering is the new high definition visual finish. Tantalus Media, the Australian studio responsible for this new version, has carried out considerable work to improve the image resolution, as well as the quality of the 3D models and textures. The result is a title that remains graphically very attractive and that stands the test of time perfectly. In fact, the visual set is a complete delight. Particularly noteworthy are the design of the settings and the magnificent work on the animations of its protagonist.
From 1 to 4 players
Few new features compared to the original title
Beyond the visual update, Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD It does not offer much more news about the original title. All single-player story content is maintained, which is structured into self-contained missions designed to be played in a few minutes; and also the multiplayer mode, which allows up to four players to cooperate by hunting ghosts and overcoming small challenges while ascending the so-called Tower of Challenges. This multiplayer mode, by the way, can be played both locally and online, although for the latter it is necessary to be subscribed to Nintendo Switch Online.
Both modes, especially the main single-player story, guarantee a good amount of content. To complete the story, it will take at least 15 hours, although this duration depends on the time it takes each player to complete each mission. Some of them involve small puzzles, which are never very difficult, but it is not unusual for the player to end up stumbling around the mansion trying to find the solution.
For all audiences
An easy game (but not that easy)
Another important comment about the difficulty: It is necessary to point out that, although it is a highly recommended game for the little ones (from 6-7 years old) to share with their parents and advance by collaborating, it is true that this title has a control little more complex than other Nintendo games. Luigi’s great mobility in the 3D environment, along with the vacuum cleaner’s independent movement, can involve quite a few buttons, and this will be difficult for those who are not as experienced with these types of games.
After Luigi’s Mansion 3 Having sold a whopping 15 million units, the adventures of Mario’s fearful brother have become the first division of Nintendo franchises – and of video games in general, in fact. It is difficult for this new version of Luigi’s Mansion 2 It is so successful in sales due to the fact that it is a remastering of a game from ten years ago, but, without a doubt, it is a great proposal for those people looking for an adventure game with a lot of exploration and a great sense of humor.
