Luciano Canfora sent to trial for defamation towards Meloni
The philologist Luciano Canfora was sent to trial for defamation of Giorgia Meloni, whom the historian had defined as a “neo-Nazi at heart”.
This is what was established by the Court of Bari with Judge Antonietta Guerra who “found that an in-depth evidential integration is necessary which is not compatible with the structure of the pre-trial hearing”.
Prime Minister Meloni joined the civil action and requested, through her lawyer, compensation of 20 thousand euros for the moral damage suffered. “The request for compensation is motivated by the psycho-physical damage suffered and the damage to reputation and image” we read in the civil party constitution. The trial will start on 7 October and the Prime Minister will be called to testify in court.
Speaking on the radio by telephone A day as a sheepCanfora's lawyer, Michele Laforgia, commented on the request for compensation made by Meloni: “In my opinion the prime minister should be worth a little more than 20 thousand euros, I would have asked for symbolic compensation but I don't see myself doing that lawyer of Giorgia Meloni”.
Outside the court, however, the lawyer explained the defense's position: “We discussed and asked for a ruling of no place to prosecute Professor Canfora, because the fact does not exist or because the fact does not constitute a crime, in any case because it is not punishable as it is punishable by the right to exercise political criticism, referred to in article 51 of the Criminal Code in relation to article 21 of the Constitution”.
Numerous associations, including Anpi, have renewed their solidarity with Luciano Canfora. A petition had already been launched a few weeks ago, to which hundreds of acronyms and citizens had joined, as a sign of solidarity with the historian.
