A celebration of Anna Politkovskaya, killed in 2006
“Anna Politkovskaya. Reporter per amore ”is the new book by Lucia Tilde Ingrosso
Its publication in the most tragic days of the war in Ukraine sheds further light on the figure of Vladmir Putinof which the late journalist was a determined enemy.
Who was Anna Politkovskaya
Politkovskaya was murdered on October 7, 2006 in Moscow, where a hitman killed her with five shots, while she was in the elevator. “She was a woman, she had to stay in the kitchen”, commented the dictator of Chechnya after her death Ramzan Kadyrov. Instead, since 1999 the courageous reporter had been engaged against Putin’s bloody campaign in Chechnya, which resulted in 30,000 civilian deaths alone. She was born in 1958 in New York, where her Soviet parents of Ukrainian nationality worked at the United Nations, she worked for the newspaper Izvestija, and then began to follow the Chechen question on behalf of Novaya Gazeta. She was the winner of various awards for her fight for human rights, she was also a negotiator during the siege of the Dubrovka theater.
Journalists killed in the Putin era
Before his tragic demise, he had already suffered a poisoning attempt on a flight to Beslan, the scene of one of the many war crimes he documented in over 40 missions in Chechnya. “Anna was the number 211 journalist killed after the collapse of the Soviet Union and the number 28 since Putin’s election”, Remembers Lucia Tilde Ingrosso, presenting a book that wants to underline how the battles for freedom never belong to a single person or even to a single people, but to all of us.
