Pre-season tests
The next Formula E championship will officially kick off from 5 to 7 December with the first E-Prix of the season in Sao Paulo, but even before the inaugural event there will be no shortage of pre-season testing scheduled from 4th to 7th November on the ‘Ricardo Tormo’ circuit in Valencia. Days that will help the teams to prepare themselves as best as possible for next season, with one of these reserved for young drivers.
Not just young people
In this very event, moreover, Formula E will not limit itself to offering opportunities to young talents, but has also recommended that the eleven participating teams field at least one female driver: “We have a full test, a full day of testing for the youngsters and where It is recommended to have at least one pilot for the whole day – explained the co-founder of Formula E, Alberto Longoto soymotor.com – we are absolutely in favor of having more and more women in this sector. I think if you walk around the Formula E paddock today, it is much more balanced than in any other championship. It is our DNA, we want to continue in this vein and give them those opportunities that, in principle, they do not have. Having said that, I would say that the The big problem of the lack of women in the world of motorsport is at the base. Out of 1,000 children who start to get into karting, one or two are women. It is very problematic for those one or two to be able to compete with the other 998 and reach the same level”.
Formula E projects
With this initiative, Longo wants to open the doors of Formula E to as many women as possible. Already last year, in the pre-season test held in Berlin, only Marta Garcia and Alice Powell had got behind the wheel of a single-seater in the electric category, and the intention is now to implement the presence of female drivers in this category: “I think what we need to start working on in the world of motorsport is to have equal opportunities – he added – putting a girl who started racing at 14 or 15, who has a disadvantage of 10/12 years compared to her male counterpart, in a world championship like Formula E or Formula 1, is unfair. It’s not about not being able to do it, of course they can, but the fact that so far they have had many less hours of training and this is what we need to change so that they have the same opportunities to reach the gates of a major championship”.
