Delights.- Although the two-year drought in the Saucillo region persists, which will cause a 30% decrease in exports of live cattle to the United States, the economic impact is projected to be over 80 million pesos.
This was announced by Manuel Balderrama Olivas, president of the Saucillo Local Livestock Association, who spoke about the problems caused by the lack of rain this summer, which has been very isolated, which has caused no pastures to appear in the fields and the ranchers have had to sell their cows in production to support the rest of the herd.
Given this scenario, it is predicted that there will be fewer heads of calves to be exported; in normal years they were quantified between 6 thousand and 7 thousand and in 2024 they will also decrease by approximately 30 percent.
Balderrama said that at the moment there is a very good outlook for exports, since the pound fluctuates at 3.30 dollars, favoring the exchange rate that exceeds 19 pesos.
The president of the Saucillo cattle ranchers announced that by maintaining the area as free of diseases, producers are already fattening the calves that they will export to the neighboring country to the north, whose price for specimens of 300 to 350 pounds is 3.30 dollars, if they exceed the weight there is a penalty of 50 cents, however, the amount of resource is greater.
Balderrama Olivas said that the lack of rain to grow the pastures has affected them, because the owners have to buy fodder such as alfalfa and concentrates that increase the cost of production.
Although the outlook is not very encouraging for next year 2025, due to the low storage capacity of the La Boquilla and Las Vírgenes dams, which will make pastures more expensive, they still have faith that the late rains will arrive and the outlook may improve a little.
