Lisa Kalteneggerdirector of the Carl Sagan Institute at Cornell, has recently talked about the imminent possibility of discovering extraterrestrial life thanks to the Telescope Spaceman James Webb. During an interview with The Telegraph, he expressed greatness optimism for the future of space research, highlighting how the telescope is particularly adept at detecting biosignatures, such as methane, that could indicate the presence of life.
Lisa Kaltenegger: We live in an extraordinary time for space exploration
Kaltenegger, author of the book “Alien Earths: Planet Hunting in the Cosmos“, highlights this as ait was golden of space exploration, made possible by technologies advanced of the telescope. He paid particular attention to the planets around Trappist-1, a red dwarf star only 40 light years away from Earth, considered very promising for the presence of water in a liquid state and, potentially, alive.
The research could lead to significant biosignature discoveries in the near future five or ten years. Although it may be necessary observe hundreds of star systems, Kaltenegger’s optimism suggests that the discovery could also happen simply looking at a single system.
What do you think, do you think we’re close to discover life forms beyond our planet?
