Midfielder Richard Ríos is one of the great appearances of Colombian football in recent times. He arrived in Brazil as an unknown, playing futsal, and then moved to the 11-on-11 field to become an important piece for Palmeiras.
Born in Vegachí (Antioquia), Ríos arrived in that country in 2018 for a test in Flamengo and his transfer began there. He was loaned to the Mexican Mazatlán, went through Guaraní de Campinas and since 2023 has been part of the ‘Verdao’.
Ríos had only scored seven goals in his career. This Wednesday he scored the eighth, and what must surely be the best he has scored in his life. He served to put Palmeiras ahead against Independiente del Valle, on the fifth date of the group stage of the Copa Libertadores.
In the 30th minute, the Colombian took a free kick from a great distance and surprised the Ecuadorian team’s goalkeeper, the Argentine Guido Villar. to open the bookmark.
The goal reminded us of a historic free kick taken by Brazilian Roberto Carlos in a friendly match between Brazil and France in 1997. Although the ball did not have the same effect, Ríos’ goal evoked that memory.
Palmeiras, who had already secured their qualification to the round of 16 of the Libertadores since last date, won 2-1 and with that they have already secured first place in group F of the tournament.
Palmeiras increased its advantage before finishing the first stage, with a penalty goal from Paraguayan Gustavo Gómez in the third minute of addition.
A tremendous play by Argentine Lautaro Díaz allowed Independiente del Valle to score the added goal, at 19 minutes of the second stage.
Palmeiras reached 13 points in five games. San Lorenzo, Independiente del Valle and Liverpool tied at four points. The Argentines will receive the Uruguayans this Thursday at the Nuevo Gasómetro.
