Latest news from the planet Mars, awaiting the regional elections in Liguria on October 27 and 28. Don’t laugh, please.
Matteo Renzi’s Italia Viva and Carlo Calenda’s Azione are grappling with their respective internal revolts. In Renzi’s little party, nailed by stubborn polls to 2%, one of the colonels, Luigi Marattin, is preparing the splitting of the atom. He is in disagreement with the move of the leader who insists and elbows to sit at the center-left table.
Renzi must be understood. With Bonino in the European elections he collected a paltry 3.8% and was locked out of the Brussels arena. He is floundering, his nose is in the water and so he throws away the much vaunted centrist project – a sort of Sarchiapone – and with hat in hand he recommends himself to Elly Schlein.
She says neither yes nor no, she procrastinates, worried about the reactions of her Renzian colonels, the cacicchi ready to vote no confidence in her, according to a successful model tested with Veltroni, Franceschini, Bersani, Renzi, Martina and the regencies of Epifani and Orfini, Zingaretti, Enrico Letta. Finally Elly Schlein elected not by the party apparatchiks – they had crowned the Renzian Bonaccini – but by the base, that is, by the voters, disgusted by the umpteenth turnaround piloted by the colonels of the PD.
In Calenda’s household (3.8%), two giants of politics, Mariastella Gelmini and Enrico Costa, howl and moan that the marriage with Orlando is not to be done. Enemy of the holy infrastructure, she accuses, already known for her assiduous frequentations in Berlusconi’s ear in tandem with Mara Carfagna. The two ladies are now part of the Azione package but evidently Mariastella is too tight for the dress sewn by the leader.
The other guy, Enrico Costa, is the champion of “liberal guarantorism”. The definition is his. Translated: only the poor go to jail. We political optimists are beyond the reach of the judiciary. Costa’s latest & “guarantor” feat, a cursus honorum that speaks for him. Already a minister in the Renzi and Gentiloni governments, vice-minister with Orlando (oh!) Keeper of the Seals in the Renzi government.
As a member of parliament, Costa wandered like a pilgrim from Forza Italia to the People of Freedom, from there to the Mixed Group (Fare/PRI/liberals), then to the Ncl-Scpl-Maie (whatever that meant) then back to the Mixed Ncl, then prodigal son in Forza Italia, back to the Mixed/Ni, to the Mixed/A+Europa-Ri. The marathon then concluded, temporarily one imagines, with his arrival in Azione-Popolari europists Riformatori-Renew Europe.
In the European elections last June he was defeated, as the grouping of Calenda and various offshoots did not reach the minimum threshold of 4%. A prayer. Illuminated by the sparkling personal curriculum mentioned above, Enrico Costa has just brought home from Parliament the decree that imposes the ban on publishing precautionary custody orders. A muzzle placed on the judiciary and information that made the taximeter-based guarantors pop open champagne. If the law had already been in force, we would barely know what Toti & Co. are accused of).
Here, Orlando the not furious frontman talks to everyone, but really everyone, even the concierge of the house. And he reasons, weaves, compares, measures, meditates, reflects, thoughtful like Kant (“The starry sky above us, the moral law within us”) and patient more than Job awaits answers, comments, replies, distinctions from the various interlocutors.
Meanwhile, the center-left program simmers unknown in the pot of good intentions and who cares about the polls that tell of the revolt of the left-wing people (oh dear, it survives in spite of the PD) against the idea of taking on board the former centrist twins. One in four PD voters has declared that with Renzi at home they will not go to vote or will not vote for the PD. Even more negative are the fans of Avs and M5Stelle.
But what do voters matter in Italy? We move forward with our heads held high and our chests out, risking yet another glorious defeat. We will thank Bibi&Bibo (the Monelli of Corriere dei Piccoli. This is for old people like me), discovering that the two Dioscuri of the defunct centrism are the castaways of a political operation that died in the cradle.
In the European elections in Italy, Renzi had 3.78% and Calenda 3.36%. In Liguria, 3.74% and 3.53% respectively. Net of the announced defections in the centre-left camp and the stubborn abstentionism, the balance for the centre-left risks going into the red.
Pier Luigi Bersani at the Fatto Quotidiano party (horror!) said definitive words on Renzi in coalition. “Are you sure, Elly, that the PD is vaccinated against Renziism? A vaccinated person can also risk Covid. I would start from the paths that sometimes with the PD also include Calenda and Renzi on the outskirts. But it is a crazy idea that someone is with the left in the government of the Emilia Romagna region and with the right in the government of the capital. In Renziism there is a political plan that travels in extracorporeal circulation. Brutally: to make the PD the Forza Italia of modern times, cutting the roots of all the secular and Catholic lefts. We are discussing Renzi from a position that is ten times more consistent than his. If the Meloni government were to fall tomorrow, I would not take Renzi on. I am interested in the authority of liberal culture that we may not like but must be based on progressive, civil, civic principles. Renzi is a theme that they throw into our homes. Let us worry about how we really expand and with whom.”
Bersani has spoken. Augh! The fact is that Renzi and Calenda are desperately clinging to the raft offered to them by the tafazzismo of the Pd. Unaware, it would seem, that the two, in the Ligurian laboratory are the bombs triggered, in view of the future national showdown, under the keel of an authentically left-wing alliance. Which neither Renzi nor Calenda contemplate. As is obvious, from their point of view.
In the meantime, the prophets of nothingness will act as Madame Meloni’s Trojan horses. Deep down, the two of them don’t mind the Lega fascist government, if it helps to keep the hated “justice-seeking” left and the M5S in line. The proof of their collusion with the right? In Parliament, the two little groups voted for the worst filth of the Meloni government. Renzi even said yes to La Russa as president of the Senate. Obviously, both are with Nordio and his Justice reform. If the Ligurian connection fails, they will console themselves by continuing to be bedside rugs at Giorgia’s dormitory.
