If you are in the presence of a person affected by lightning, follow the following steps:
1. Call 911 or your local emergency number.
2. Check to see if the person is breathing and has a pulse. If not, if you know the technique, start cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) immediately.
3. If the person is breathing and has a pulse, lay them on their side in a recovery position.
4. Look for visible lesions and treat them. Cover burns with a clean, dry cloth.
5. Monitor the person’s vital signs until medical help arrives.
Do not move the person unless necessary; movement can worsen injuries. Do not give the person anything to eat or drink and avoid touching the burns with bare hands.
If you, too, were struck by lightning, seek medical attention immediately, even if you don’t feel sick.
