For more than three weeks France has been trying to catch ‘the Fly’ but the prey, or rather the prisoner, resists him. Mohamed Amra, the fugitive behind that nickname, remains missing since in mid-May he escaped from the van that was taking him from the courts to the Évreux prison with the help of several accomplices who, hooded and armed, attacked the van with his vehicle near the Incarville tollbooth and killed two agents who were escorting him. Laure Beccuau, the Paris prosecutor, said a few days ago that they had “important clues” about the case, but in the French media there are contradictory versions from those who say they know about the investigation. Some maintain that Amra has not moved from the area of the assault. Others claim that he has been abroad for some time.
But the limited progress in the search for ‘the Fly’, to which Interpol has joined with the issuance of a red alert and has nearly 350 investigators involved, has not caused the case to fall into oblivion. In fact, his disappearance has fueled curiosity about this prisoner who has thirteen convictions – robbery, attempted extortion, hostage-taking, attempted murder… – and has been through several French prisons. Amra (Ruán, 30 years old) is now even interested in her love life, and it was not necessary to find him to get to know her. The audio recordings made in his cell – and which for months remained archived in a court file – reveal the relationship peppered with lies that he had with a twenty-year-old woman from Marseille called Nawel, whom his ‘father-in-law’ nicknamed Smurfette, who ended up involved in the murder of a trafficker who was taking business from her boyfriend.
Amra, as it became known after her film escape, used up to nine different cell phones during her stay in prison, which allowed her to control her businesses and give all kinds of orders in the shadows. He also called Nawel, who called him a “seller of dreams” in the Snapchat messages they exchanged. Their relationship, according to the French newspaper ‘Le Parisien’, began in the summer of 2020 when they met on the street and gave each other their phone numbers. He told her that her name was Yanis. She wanted to put “a little madness in her daily life” after breaking up with her long-term partner, failing an exam and trying her luck as a masseuse. It was “love at first sight,” the girl said when she collapsed in front of the police who arrested her two and a half years after that crush.
A rental Audi with bullet holes
Until then, he lived a romance full of warning signs that Nawel did not see or did not want to see, perhaps due to the distance between them, first, due to their place of residence and, later, due to the imprisonment of his partner. ‘La Mosca’ invited him on trips to Paris and Marbella and handled a lot of money, but always avoided questions about his personal life. His girlfriend never knew exactly what she did, nor did she know that Amra had another lover in Dreux who was pregnant. In the circle of the young woman from Marseille they only found one explanation: “she was madly in love.” To such an extent that she regularly rented vehicles in her name that she then put in the hands of her boyfriend and once had to return an Audi with bullet holes in her body without that, apparently, make him suspicious.
Nawel got deep into the dirty dealings of what is now France’s most wanted fugitive. Even with him imprisoned she carried out his orders. Like in June 2022, when Amra commissioned him to receive several men at the Saint-Charles station and rent them an apartment where they could rest from the task that had brought them there and which was none other than murdering Ugur T., a trafficker. that the competition made him in Dreux. His body ended up hidden for a time in the girl’s workplace – a massage parlor – and she probably burned the garbage bags with the victim’s clothes. “They used me,” she apologized when she was arrested. She still called Mohamed Yanis.
The audios collected in the prison from which this prisoner operated have not only helped to understand how he managed to continue his criminal work behind bars, but have also revealed the prisoner’s sexual activity. In fact, those in charge of analyzing the recordings were greatly surprised when they heard one of the visits from Sabah, Amra’s sister, and discovered that the vis-à-vis ended “in all likelihood in intercourse.” The young woman was, in fact, Nawel, who had entered with the other woman’s documentation. Now no one can explain how she did it because they hardly look alike physically, and no one understands either how the dangerousness of ‘the Fly’ was not better assessed – which has led to a judicial investigation – to prevent it from taking flight.
