LG decided back in April 2021 to abandon the mobile market to “dedicate more resources to other areas of growth”, which left one of the most anticipated products behind: the LG Rollable. Designed with a roll-up screen, it generated great expectations in its presentation in January 2021 within the framework of CES in Las Vegas for its futuristic design and its focus on productivity and entertainment, but it was not marketed.
His demonstration was brief and little else was known afterwards, but now a recent published patent application by the LG Display gives some hope about the possible resurrection of this phone.
Could the long-awaited LG Rollable return?
We remember that this project assured that the LG Rollable would have a flexible screen that could change size depending on the owner’s needssomething that a year ago was (and still is) quite a challenge due to the technical problems that may arise. The company modified the software so that the Android interface adapted to different screen sizes instantly.
There was talk that its screen It would start at 6.8 inches and extend to 7.4 and the company had managed to make its operation very similar to that of a high-end smartphone of that year. It had a Snapdragon 888 processor with 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage, a 4500 mAh battery and some 64 Mpx and 12 Mpx cameras.
According to what they say from Techradar, LG Display, The company that published the patent is a subsidiary of the LG Group, which designs and manufactures screens and licenses them to other companiesincluding the majority shareholder, LG Electronics, a separate entity. The patent includes information about a screen that is rolled up using, apparently, the same technology that the LG Rollable was going to have. As reported from MSPower Userwas presented on October 10 of last yearbut it has seen the light a year later.
It is a 21 page application which includes schematics detailing how to use mobile display technology for smartphone-sized devices, as well as larger frames. For now, there is no official news in relation to LG being able to produce smartphones again. If we take into account that LG Display licenses other manufacturersit would not be surprising if this technology is applied by someone other than the South Koreans.
