This week together with a commission of animal welfare specialists and in management of elephants and other wildlife, we visited Ely at the San Juan de Aragón Zoo, the African elephant who lived more than 20 years in a circus and who has been living in the zoo for 10 years.
And it is that we are aware that this sensitive issue has aroused great interest among the population and generated a lot of controversy because in effect it is a matter with many edges that, yes, of course, can and should be analyzed and discussed, but from knowledge with seriousness and respect, not from improvisation, ignorance and lack of respect for the institutions already dozens of doctors and specialists who for much of their lives have studied, researched and cared for elephants and many other animals.
Nobody is unaware that our country is very polarized, it seems that it is full of rancor, resentment, anger. That’s why we spend every day between lawsuits and confrontations, in the political and media sphere, in social networks and in the streets themselves.
And what all these clashes are causing is that we lose sight of what really matters. It is very unfortunate that we care more about being right and winning the debate, to help someone and gain inner peace and tranquility.
I am sure that we all want the best for the elephant Ely or at least we do not want anyone to suffer or harm her. The politicians, the “animalists”, the zootechnical veterinarians, everyone! and it would be very absurd and petty to think otherwise.
In other words, why would a zoological institution that has spent 10 years spend millions of pesos on its nutrition, on its medicines, on its treatments, on specialists who attend it daily, want to mistreat or harm this incredible animal?
I said it during the visit we made to him and I repeat it: There is no reason for us to continue in a confrontation, we may not agree on certain issues and forms, obviously we do not all think the same, each head is a world, but it is not worth disqualifying , invent, condemn, speak from mere ignorance and even insult.
Before the visit to Ely, I was confident that the “animal rights” organizations that insist that she be transferred to a sanctuary in Brazil had, at least, good intentions and good feelings, and that they only lacked knowledge and information.
But this Wednesday I discovered that it is not like that, that it is not about looking for the best for Ely or about releasing wildlife under human care. It is about them, about her ego, about her own benefit.
is that, I tell you. While the Biologist Dagamar Olivia, Professor at the Faculty of Sciences of the UNAM and specialist in elephants, as well as the Doctor Honoris Causa, Luis Palazuelos Platas, an older adult expert in wildlife, teacher of many generations of zoo technicians in Mexico, spoke and explained in detail about Ely’s health, about the conditions in which he has lived and lives, about the treatments he receives daily and the risks that moving to Brazil would imply, the self-called animalists, around 10 people, did not stop shouting, condemning and insult. Full of hate, they assured that the specialists were lying, and called them fakers.
Before the media they assured that sometimes the elephant only eats three lettuces and that day they injected her legs so that she could walk in front of politicians and the media.
They never said to which organization or civil association they belonged, they did not say what studies or preparation they have, they did not present the supposed medical report where it is ensured that Ely suffers abuse and neglect, they did nothing but disqualify and attack the specialists.
We recommend you read:
Not like this, neither I nor anyone can believe that Ely’s well-being is her fight. On this topic, and on many that today are life or death for millions of people and animals in our country, we cannot continue fighting and doing shows to see which one goes viral and gains more strength for political, economic or any other purposes. nature.
With knowledge, seriousness and respect, let us fight intelligently for the causes that matter, otherwise egos and personal interests will end up trivializing our present and nullifying the future of more and more people.
