ANDThe president of Ecuador, Daniel Noboareacted to the ruling issued this Thursday by the international Court of Justice (CIJ) with a message addressed to the former president Rafael Correa (2007-2017) in which he tells her to “cry to the crying” for having asked the international community to put pressure on his Government after the assault on the Mexican embassy to arrest his former vice president Jorge Glas.

After the images of Correa, Noboa appears in his office accompanied by advisors and apparently receives the ICJ resolution from the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Human Mobility, Gabriela Sommerfeld.
And a few minutes later Noboa had Correa’s response, who called him “Caligula’s apprentice.”
“How barbaric! This apprentice of Caligula understands absolutely nothing. The worst thing is that it is not going to be him, but the country, that will pay for his clumsiness, arrogance and irresponsibility,” the former president wrote on the social network X.
The international court in The Hague rejected the precautionary measures requested by the Government of Mexico to protect its diplomatic headquarters and assets after having broken relations with Ecuador following the invasion of its embassy in Quito, which occurred on April 5.
Precautionary measures are issued, if necessary, in a provisional phase, before assessing the merits of the case, so this Thursday’s decision is not a ruling on the violations denounced by both parties, issues that will be addressed. later, still undated.
Mexico and Ecuador have countersued each other before the ICJ for the events that occurred on April 5, with mutual accusations of having transgressed international conventions and norms.
Glas had entered the Mexican embassy in Quito on December 17, 2023 to request asylum, considering himself innocent of the charges and accusations against him and a victim of political persecution and ‘lawfare’ (use of the judicial apparatus against political adversaries).
Glas, who was one of the strong men of the Correa Government, had an arrest warrant hanging over him as he was accused of alleged embezzlement (embezzlement of public funds) in the reconstruction works of the provinces affected by the strong earthquake of 2016.
Due to this circumstance, an Ecuadorian court decided to keep him imprisoned in La Roca, Ecuador’s maximum security prison, despite having declared that his detention was illegal and arbitrary.
