Mexico.- President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) asked the United States to publish the audios of Genaro García Lunaformer Secretary of Public Security, on alleged threats and bribes to journalists and attempts to manipulate witnesses in his case after being detained, as revealed by the US Attorney’s Office.
In La Mañanera on June 16, 2022, AMLO said that although it has not been determined whether the Garcia Luna recordings will be evidence for his trial, he would ask the US authorities to make themselves known to the public in order to that the facts about acts of corruption and abuse of authority are exhibited.
“It is a very delicate matter, in fact, yesterday this information was released from the United States Attorney’s Office about some alleged recordings and once García Luna was arrested, they recorded it, it is not known if this is proof, if it is going to be accepted. What I would ask from now on is that Regardless of whether the recordings have legal value or not, hopefully a way will be found to make them known“, said AMLO on the García Luna case.
The federal president stressed the need for “all the facts to be known and reproved”, reiterating his position that it is necessary “purify public life“and that nothing of the information that is of interest to all Mexicans be hidden.
“I have always maintained that justice has a lot to do with prevention, that all the facts are known and that they are condemned, stigmatized acts of abuse of authority, repression, corruption, that nothing else remains in court, in files. This helps a lot to improve public life, to purify public life, transparency (…) that all the information is disclosed, that nothing is hidden, that we know everything“, he insisted.
AMLO criticized that in some countries investigations are resolved and cases are closed, without citizens having access to information, for which he insisted that “everything be aired”, particularly in a case like this, which is a former Secretary of Public Security, that is, that his actions concern the security of citizens and the nation.
“We want them not to be closed, for everything to be ventilated, for public life to be increasingly public.and more in these matters that damage so much, because we are talking about the security of citizens and national security,” added the president of Mexico.
According to the United States Attorney’s Office, the recordings of Genaro García Luna are proof that he used resources obtained from acts of corruption in order to silence journalists, which would also help explain how he would have helped the Sinaloa Cartel during the six-year terms of Felipe Calderón and Vicente Fox.

Finally, López Obrador pointed out that the responsibility for García Luna’s actions comes from “above”of Felipe Calderonfor his decision to declare the drug waran “error” that was made in an improvised way, since there are no official documents that would have made diagnoses and analyzed alternatives to the problem.
“I think that although he was a very important figure in the government, the responsibility is held above in the wrong decision to face the crime problem with coercive measures, declaring war, I think that was the main mistake,” AMLO said about Calderón and his six-year term.
