It is difficult to write looking to the future when the impacts of a humanitarian catastrophe of these dimensions are still very present and the priorities are placed on the essential immediate responses. But urgency should not be the alibi to avoid responsibilities – political and judicial – or to avoid reflection on the many lessons that DANA has left us and how we can convert them into collective teachings.
We are obliged to do so if we do not want the same thing as always to happen again. Periodically, life offers us lessons that we later do not know how to convert into teachings. This is what happened with the great recession, then with the pandemic and it can happen again with the catastrophe triggered – but not caused – by DANA.
