Actor Leonardo DiCaprio joins Scottish Rewilding Alliance
American actor Leonardo DiCaprio called on the authorities to recognize Scotland as a leader in nature restoration. He wrote about this on his Instagram (the social network is banned in the Russian Federation; it belongs to the Meta corporation, which is recognized as extremist in Russia and is banned).
DiCaprio has joined the Scottish Rewilding Alliance, an alliance of 20 nature organizations that are calling on the Scottish Government to recognize the country as the world's first “rewilding” nation, with the aim of developing conservation strategies. The measure commits Scotland to restoring 30 percent of its land and sea.
“About six thousand years ago, much of northern Scotland was covered with broadleaf forests, bush fields, heaths and moors. Today's landscape is in stark contrast to the past. It consists of depleted hills with severely degraded sheep pastures and patches of non-native spruce plantations,” DiCaprio wrote.
The actor added that calling the country “regenerating” could make Scotland a leader in restoring landscapes and wildlife, providing clean air and water, storing carbon, reducing flooding and improving the lives of citizens.
Earlier, Leonardo DiCaprio congratulated the Kazakh authorities on the successful restoration of the saiga population.
