Mexico City.- The Mexican Bar Association (BMA) expressed its concern about the proposal to elect judges by popular vote, raised by the Federal executive in the judicial reform initiative, given the security conditions of the country and because it does not address the problem of impunity.
In a statement, the president of the civil association, Víctor Olea Peláez, expressed that the BMA joined the opening of the virtual president-elect, Claudia Sheinbaum, to submit this reform proposal to a broad discussion process.
“The reform presented by the President of the Republic must be discussed and analyzed to ensure that it serves to improve Mexican justice in the greatest number of aspects possible. “The reform presented by the President of the Republic must be discussed and analyzed to ensure that it serves to improve Mexican justice in the greatest number of aspects possible. It is very worrying that the President of the Republic proposes to elect all the and judges in a country in which security conditions have expanded considerably,” he said.
“The initiative presented by the president does not address the problems of criminal, family, civil or labor justice, nor does it propose solutions to the problems of growing impunity that we experience in the country. That is why it is necessary to involve universities, bar associations, business chambers, research centers and citizens in general to, together, find solutions to the lack of justice in Mexico.”
Olea pointed out that the moment in Mexico is conducive to building a system of procurement and administration of justice that serves citizens.
“The lack of justice in Mexico involves a large number of actors, processes and weaknesses, so it is not possible to assign to a single body or power, which together we have not done during the last six years,” he indicated.
“This is a moment of change, let’s really take advantage of it to improve the justice system. Open and plural dialogue is the right way to find solutions to the problems that belong to all Mexicans.”
