The head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia Sergey Lavrov on Wednesday, October 20, met with a delegation of the radical Taliban movement (recognized as terrorist and prohibited in Russia) in Moscow. It is reported by RIA News…
According to the minister, during the meeting he was able to discuss with the Taliban the issue of forming a new government in Afghanistan. At the same time, he stressed that Moscow had already assessed the measures taken by the movement to stabilize the situation in the country.
“We note his efforts to stabilize the military-political situation, to improve the activities of the state apparatus,” Lavrov said, stressing that the change of power in Afghanistan should be regarded as a fait accompli.
The Foreign Minister added that during the conversation with the Taliban representatives, he also called on them to fulfill their promises that the country’s territory will not be used against third states.
The Moscow format meeting on Afghanistan will be held in the Russian capital on October 20. Representatives from ten countries of the region, as well as a high-ranking Taliban delegation led by Deputy Prime Minister Abdul Salam Hanafi, will take part in the multilateral consultations. It was reported that members of the terrorist organization intend to ask for economic and political support for Afghanistan.
On October 18, the head of the State Department, Ned Price, announced that the United States would not participate in the “Moscow format” on Afghanistan due to the difficulties in logistics. He explained that it is logistically difficult for Washington to be involved this week, but the US supports this process and may be involved in the future.
