Evacuations in Brittany for historical floods that have activated the red alert
The historical floods in several rivers in Rennes and in the surroundings of this Breton city for the persistent rains of recent days, has led the authorities to proceed to preventive evacuations waiting for a possible worsening with the red alert activated on Monday. This situation is a consequence of the passage of two successive storms, Éowyn and Herminia, who have shaped in particular the French Atlantic facade with rains and strong winds.
Vigicrues, the French Flood Surveillance Service, has decreed that red alert in the Cauce of the Seiche and Vilaine rivers as it passes through Rennes and through several surrounding locations, and has underlined the exceptional nature of this episode on its website . In the case of Seiche, the flood is superior to that of 1966, which so far constituted the reference, and with the rains that will fall in the next few days the situation “should be maintained”, has warned vigicrues.
In Rennes and other locations hundreds of people were evacuated on Sunday, although some could return to their homes. In some meteorological observatories of the west end of Brittany, more than 240 liters per square meter have been collected since the beginning of January and between 150 to 200 in some of the department of Ile et Vilaine with capital in Rennes. That represents between 60 % and 80 % more than normal.
