Berlin.- Lamine Yamal became the youngest player in history to play in the European Championship on Saturday as a starter in Spain’s 3-0 victory over Croatia in their first match of the tournament.
Yamal also became the youngest player to assist a goal in the Euros, when he sent a cross pass to Dani Carvajal for the third goal before halftime. Enzo Scifo was 18 years old when he assisted Belgium’s goal against Yugoslavia in 1984.
Yamal is 16 years and 338 days old. The previous record belonged to the Polish Kacper Kozlowski, who faced Spain in 2021 at the age of 17 years and 246 days.
“It is impacting everyone. He has to continue improving every day and over time he will be an incredible footballer,” acknowledged Spanish coach Luis de la Fuente.
It was Yamal’s eighth match with the Spanish team. In addition, he has played 47 matches in the Spanish league and Champions League with Barcelona this season.
Yamal will turn 17 one day before the Euro 2024 final on July 14 in Berlin.
