Electrification runs fast in the heart of the Motor Valley and soon too Lamborghini will begin a transition process that will lead to the hybridization of its range and the birth of the first full electric model. Throughout its history, the Sant’Agata Bolognese company has always been able to stand out and innovate, in terms of technology and style. He remembered it Mitja Borkert, Head of Design of Automobili Lamborghini and pencil who gave life to some of the most distinctive cars of the Bull, including the futuristic Terzo Millennio. Head of the Style Center since 2016, we met the German designer and engineer at the Milano Monza Motor Show where the del Toro brand showed the Huracan Tecnica. During the interview with Mitja Borkert, therefore, the style of Sant’Agata Bolognese was discussed but also the electric Lamborghini to come.
What does it mean for you to participate in an event like the Milano Monza Motor Show?
“The Milano Monza Motor Show is a special occasion. In recent years there haven’t been many opportunities to participate in such events and for this I am very happy to be here. MIMO is a very interesting format, all the cars are outside, visible to everyone. And then we are in the capital of design, of style, what could be more comfortable in a context like this if not a Lamborghini. We participated with the Huracan Tecnica, an important step forward from a design point of view on this model, perhaps the largest we have ever made on this car. It is fun and engaging to drive but certainly also particularly fascinating to see. “
You have in fact abandoned the salons for a few years, yet you participate in some selected appointments. Matter of style?
“It is crucial and important for us to take part in different events because we want to be as close as possible to our customers. For example, we participate in Pebble Beach, Goodwood or the Milano Monza Motor Show, where we can be in contact with people, with the new generations and this is fundamental. When we develop a car, when we define its style, we always have the customer in mind because we want to satisfy him and fulfill every expectation because we want to guarantee that astonishing effect that you get every time when you look at a Lamborghini. “
With Cor Tauri you look to the future, does this also begin a new design path? How will you deal with it?
“Lamborghini was born as a design company, we have always had a strong stylistic language. We are known for making the most iconic cars, such as the Miura or the Countach but these are only the two most important models. There are for example the Espada, the Reventon, the Sesto element, the LM002. Our history is full of these cars so impactful so we have such a rich history, also from a design point of view and therefore I think I have infinite possibilities of inspiration. I could design Lamborghinis for the next 100 years maybe. We have this unique DNA, which consists in the silhouette, in a particularly expressive front with this particularly inclined glazing. You can have a world full of supercars but if you put a Lamborghini in the center, you will always know that that is a Lamborghini. The others have a more curvilinear approach. So I can draw on these styles and I can design any type of car. My promise for the future is that there will always be a model that exceeds all expectations. There will be no new stylistic language ever because we will renew ourselves for every single car. This is my goal, each Lamborghini will have its character, its purpose and its mission. When you see the Huracan Technique and compare it with the other declinations, you understand that each has its own specific function. “
Technology and style in Lamborghini run together. How do you combine these two aspects?
“We want to be inspirational and be the most innovative supercar brand. We are not just design, we want to offer the best at 360 ° on our cars. It is important because we are a relatively small company, we all work closely together: from engineers to aerodynamics to designers, everyone. We not only have the style in mind but also the performance and emotions that come from it and therefore how you perceive a Lamborghini must always be able to convey that sense of excitement. Our cars must always surprise, with a whirlwind of emotions. There may be something different but it will always be a Lamborghini. “
Will it be the same for the first electric Lamborghini?
“Surely. I am firmly convinced of this. In the past there has always been a new generation for cars, from Formula 1 to production cars. In the automotive industry there has always been a new technology to test and implement, and certainly this will also be possible with the electric. If there is a company that can do it, it is us. We know how to make the most of new technologies and use them in the right way. I can’t speak in detail about what Lamborghini’s first electric car will look like but I assure you it will be incredible. “
So will electrification be a turning point or a simple step in your success story?
“Our CEO Stephan Winkelmann was clear from this point of view: we will be the first supercar brand to electrify its entire range with the hybrid, it will be a path made with the right technology and with the right emotions but also with performance. adequate. It will be a Lamborghini capable of thrilling even the new generations. “
You have made Urus a case study: how can you improve a car capable of breaking all records?
“The Urus is such a beautiful car. It’s an SUV, with the right proportions. It was able to create its own segment, that of super SUVs. I don’t see any real competitors at the moment. In case we wanted to challenge ourselves, surely we could work more on the emotional side and driving dynamics. Urus already offers it but of course we can still improve. And we will do it. “
What will be the biggest challenge in the future?
“The biggest challenge will be to play an important role in the society of the future. We are strengthening Lamborghini for all of us. It is a brand we are all proud of, for its positioning and for the offer it gives to customers. Countach and Sian were made possible thanks to the strength of our brand. We have to work hard every day to continue our success. From my point of view, I will try to keep an always innovative approach, which keeps our cars distinct from the others. “
