One person was trapped under a truck in Kuopio. The truck driver is suspected of grossly endangering traffic safety and causing death.
Kurkimäki On Tuesday, an accident occurred in the timber loading area in Kuopio, in which one person died. The deceased was an employee of VR.
There is a level crossing in the area where a lumber truck and a lumber train collided. Firefighter on duty at Pohjois Savo rescue service Antti Korhonen says that one person died after falling under the truck.
“The accident happened in the loading area where wood is loaded. An empty lumber truck was crossing the level crossing at a very low speed. For some unknown reason it hurt [osumaan] to the last carriage of the train”, says Korhonen.
There is no certainty about the speed of the train, but its speed was not necessarily very fast either, Korhonen adds.
VR told in a statement later on Tuesday that the dead person was their employee.
“VR helps the authorities in every way to find out the causes of the accident. We are organizing crisis assistance for the local work community and express our deepest condolences to the relatives of those who died in the accident,” the announcement reads.
The Eastern Finland Police Department announced early Tuesday that the driver of the timber truck is suspected of grossly endangering traffic safety and causing death.
“In the preliminary investigation, the police are investigating the reasons that led to the incident and the conditions that existed at the time of the accident,” said the inspector Elina Katajamäki.
First the task of the emergency vehicle that arrived at the scene of the accident was to get the person out from under the truck. In the end, there was nothing left for the rescue service to do in the situation.
“This is a really special event when it's a loading area and a really low situational speed. I haven't seen anything like it in my career, and I haven't even heard of it,” says Korhonen.
The police also arrived to investigate the incident and the accident investigation board was called to the scene, says fire master Korhonen.
Train service There is a break between Kuopio and Pieksämäki because of what happened, it is clear from VR's website.
