Australia: koala on the list of endangered animals
The Australian government has announced that i koalas living in the east of the country they will be considered officially endangered species due to the tragic dwindling of their number due to the fires that have devastated the region. The other less contingent causes that led to the decision are climate change, a number of diseases, deforestation and drought. The measure affects New South Wales, the Borough of Canberra and Queensland.
The Scientific Commission on Endangered Species, an independent government agency, has estimated how the koala population has increased from 185,000 in 2001 to 92,000 in 2021. Before the devastating fires of 2019-2020, these animals were already at risk from logging, drought, disease, car accidents and dog attacks, said Josey Sharrad, an official with the International Fund for Animal Welfare. “We should never have allowed things to get to where we are, so we risk losing a national icon,” he added.
