The North Korean leader said, addressing his security officials, “Be sharp blades that cut down firmly!” According to what was reported by the South Korean Yonhap News Agency.
This came during a photo session with participants in the National Conference of Heads of Branches of Public Security Centers on Sunday, according to the official North Korean Central News Agency.
In an English-language bulletin, the agency quoted Kim as saying, “When all the country’s public security sub-centers… become a fortress that vigorously defends single-minded unity… our cause of building an ideal society for the people will advance more dynamically.”
Kim Jong Un also called for adhering to revolutionary and class principles while becoming “sharp blades that resolutely fight against all elements encroaching on the socialist state,” the statement said.
The photo session came after North Korea held a meeting of security officials for the first time in 12 years from April 30 to May 1 in Pyongyang, according to Yonhap.
North Korea’s public security centers are lower-level organizations under the Ministry of Public Security and are charged with maintaining public safety and protecting people’s lives, but they are known to monitor anti-regime activities.
North Korea has adopted laws aimed at strengthening internal censorship in recent years, including one passed in 2020 to “reject reactionary ideology and culture” and another adopted in 2023 to protect Pyongyang’s dialect and culture.
The Anti-Reactionary Ideology Law calls for people who bring and distribute foreign culture and information to be sentenced to up to 10 years in prison with hard labour.
