In the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, Kiev’s mayor Vitali Klitschko once again speaks out – and accuses Germany of acting too hesitantly.
Berlin – In view of concerns about a Russian attack on Ukraine, the mayor of Kiev, Vitali Klitschko, also expects support from the federal government.
However, Germany is reluctant to supply its country with defensive weapons – in his view, for fear of further provoking Russian President Vladimir Putin. “This position is difficult to understand,” he said “Bild”.
He said the US-Russia security negotiations in Ukraine without his country’s direct involvement were a slap in the face. “How can that be?” he asked.
Klitschko: The threat of war should alarm Germans
Russia sees its security threatened by NATO and is therefore demanding an end to NATO’s eastward expansion and, in particular, a renunciation of Ukraine’s membership. Western countries, on the other hand, are alarmed about the current Russian troop deployment near Ukraine.
Klitschko continued: “If the US and Europe allow him to attack Ukraine, he will not stop at Ukraine. Then Putin will turn his attention to the Baltic States.” He added: “And when he speaks of his desire to give back the Soviet empire, that also includes the former East Germany. Therefore, the threat of war against Ukraine should alarm every German.” dpa
