Green flag with outstanding points
The 2024 MotoGP season will officially kick off on Friday 8 March, but the imminent turning on of the green light has not yet clarified doubts about some aspects relating to this year's calendar. Initially made official with 22 race weekends, Dorna subsequently reduced the number of events to 21 for the cancellation to the surprise of Argentine Grand Prixthanks to the new economic policies adopted by the new government of Javier Milei.
Question mark over Kazakhstan
However, the Argentine weekend, which was scheduled for April 5-7, may not be the only one to be removed from the calendar. Even today, in fact, the role of the Kazakhstan Grand Prix. At present, the event is once again subject toapproval of the Sokol routejust like it happened last season.
In that case, the project for a new contract was postponed to 2024, but the future of the Kazakh GP, the eighth round of the world championship from 14 to 16 June, remains seriously in the balance. Unlike 2023, in which no replacement with other circuits occurred, if a conclusion is not reached within the established timeframe, Kazakhstan could (but the conditional is a must) be replaced byHungary with the Balaton circuit, already included in the Superbike world championship.
The words of Ezpeleta
Interviewed by Marca, the CEO of Dorna, Carmelo Ezpeleta, however hopes that the calendar of 21 GPs can be confirmed, including Sokol: “I hope so – he has declared – but this cannot say everything. At the moment there is no problem in the near future. Argentina was canceled because we weren't sure we could run the race in conditions that would allow us to be in Austin the following Sunday. The promoter was unable to guarantee the services that could be provided due to the situation on site, and this is what we thought. The rest is still there. I don't think if something was canceled we would replace it. One of the reasons we have 22 is that we believe that a long phase of the season should be covered by races. This allows us to have 21 and we are good to go. We've always said that more than 22 doesn't seem right to us. I don't see any problem with the rest.”
