Kabosu, the Japanese shiba inu dog, famous for being the protagonist of several viral memes and who inspired the logo of the Dogecoin cryptocurrency, died this Friday, 24, in Japan, her owner announced.
“She died peacefully while being caressed,” said Atsuko Sato in a message on her blog, in which she thanked fans from all over the world for caring for Kabosu.

Kabosu’s digital adventure began in 2010, when her owner published on her blog a photo of the beige-haired dog, on a sofa with a surprised expression and her paws crossed.
This image made her an internet phenomenon and gave rise to the “Doge” meme (name probably derived from the word “dog”).
A multitude of versions of this meme have been used around the world.

Kabosu also inspired the logo of the Dogecoin cryptocurrency, created in 2013, whose popularity soared with the support of Elon Musk.
“Doge is the most famous dog of the modern era”, she is “the Mona Lisa of the internet”, one of her unconditional fans recently told AFP.
As Kabosu was adopted from a shelter, her exact age was unknown. Sato, who gave an interview to AFP a few weeks ago, believes she was around 18 years old.
