The former president of ERC Oriol Junqueras has “absolutely” denied that he is behind the doll that appeared hanging from a bridge in his town, Sant Vicenç dels Horts, in 2019. In the midst of controversy over the party’s false flag propaganda actions, figures like Ernest Maragall suggested that this came from the environment of the former vice president himself.
Junqueras has rejected it outright. “How unfair it must be to attribute to someone that while he was in a trial with sessions of 10 hours a day [en referencia al del procés] decide to hang a doll of himself and do it in such a way that his own children can see it,” he responded in an interview on Catalunya Ràdio. For Junqueras, suggesting this type of thing is “out of place.” “It is not only immoral but also very unrational,” he added.
The former president of the party, who now aspires to return to office, believes that it should not be necessary for him to have to deny being behind the doll. “If someone is a parent, they realize that it is impossible for someone to think of something like that. “What profit should we expect from something of this type?” he asked after both the former ERC leader Xavier Vendrell and Maragall hinted that the action of the doll came from the same town of Sant Vicenç dels Horts.
Following the accusations that placed him in the Montserrat monastery on October 27, 2017, the day of the Unilateral Declaration of Independence in Parliament, Junqueras has assured that he did not miss “any of his obligations” during that period. In this sense, he has defended that on October 30 he went to his Ministry of Economy and to the Parliament, highlighting that he was “the only member” of the Government who did so. Regarding that specific day, he responded that he was doing his job to try to find as much international support as possible. However, he did not want to specify whether he was in the Montserrat monastery that day, as Vendrell claimed, because, as he said, the place is “irrelevant.”
Regarding the defamatory posters about the brothers Pasqual and Ernest Maragall, he has insisted that he knew nothing and that he learned about the case when it was published in the press. A version that contradicts that of the general secretary of the party, Marta Rovira, who assures that Junqueras was informed, as stated in the party’s internal report on the case.
On different occasions the former president of the party has made reference to WhatsApp groups in which he was not there to demonstrate that actions were taken without him knowing anything. Asked about Rovira, he has shown himself willing to meet with her and, in fact, has denied that he has rejected offers of meetings. “I am willing to meet with everyone, obviously; with Marta, too. We are united by many things and we have done very relevant things that we can feel proud of. Now and always,” he said.
