The groups criticize the decision of the mayor to celebrate the great parade on the same day as the children’s cavalcade of the Grape Harvest Festival
There will be no celebration of Moors and Christians in the patron saint festivities of Jumilla, which start on August 12. The organization has decided to suspend all acts due to the lack of understanding with the City Council, indicates the president of this group, Francisca Pérez.
During the Celebration Commission, the mayor, Juana Guardiola, informed the groups that the great parade of Moors and Christians was going to share the limelight with the children’s cavalcade of the Grape Harvest Festival. The fact that both acts were held on Sunday, August 14, although at different times, did not please the Association of Moors and Christians Don Pedro I. Guardiola’s proposal was to carry out the parade at 7:00 p.m., and the parade at 9:00 p.m. For this reason, the aforementioned association subsequently held a general assembly, where it was unanimously decided to suspend the planned programming this year.
The reasons why the festeros did not agree to celebrate their acts on the same day is that they were going to share an itinerary with the Harvest Festival. «It is something unfeasible, impossible and detrimental, and even more so with ten days of the fair in which there can be room for everyone within order and respect. The idea has to be that each of the groups can carry out their parades without being pressured to others, “says Pérez.
Upon hearing the news, the councilor met with the president of Moros y Cristianos and proposed that they celebrate the Moorish entrance on the Saturday before the festivities, that is, on August 6, promising to extend the dates and have all the lighting ready. especially on the streets. But a second general assembly of the festive group decided not to accept the offer, considering that “it still displaces us more. That day is when the Association had scheduled the Night of the Torches and the festive concert at the Castle».
“It has been impossible”
The first mayor regrets the decision of the group. “All possibilities were offered to them; they are not left out of the festivities at all, since the idea was to extend the dates and that everything was in good condition. They only contemplated an option and an understanding has been impossible, “says Guardiola.
For her part, the president of the Moors and Christians of Jumilla indicates that “we will continue to fight for the festivals, which have 400 years of history and will not be forgotten. We have been accompanying and promoting the veneration of our Patron Saint, the Virgin of the Assumption, for 35 years, and we will continue there. It is not our will to stay at home. We understand that the problems of another group cannot be solved at our expense.
