Still on track
Passion for racing is something that knows no age or boundaries. We see it more and more frequently in many championships, from Formula 1 to two-wheelers, where alongside young, eager drivers, long-time veterans resist on the track. The latest to join this group of ‘highlander‘ is a hero of two worlds, one of those few pilots to have achieved great success both in the Old Continent and in America: Juan Pablo Montoya.
At 48 years old, Juancho has decided to test himself again and so, while his son Sebastian is looking for a path towards F1, he will return to racing in the NASCAR Cup Seriesthe premier category of American covered-wheel motorsport. Montoya will compete as a ‘wild card’ for the 23XI team – co-owned by American basketball legend Michael Jordan – in the race on September 15th in Watkins Glengetting behind the wheel of a Toyota Camry.
Hunting for tic tac toe
In his very long career, which in fact never stopped from the beginning to the mid 90s, Montoya achieved successes in practically all the categories in which he raced: his list of victories includes seven F1 victories, two Indy500 victories, one IndyCar title, one IMSA title, two victories at the 24 Hours of Daytona and even two victories in the Cup Series.
In the NASCAR reference championship Montoya raced from the end of 2006 to 2014, taking part in 255 races and winning on two occasionsalways on the road course: in 2007 in Sonoma And in 2010 right at Watkins Glenwhere he will return to the scene in just over a month. Together with Marcos Ambrose and Daniel Suarez he is the only driver born outside the USA to have won more than one race in this championship. If he were to score a historic hat-trick, he would become the most successful foreigner ever in the Cup Series.. In Italy his race will be visible in live streaming on the Mola TV platform, which holds the rights to the championship.
