Organizations and unions that represent the vast majority of the journalistic profession have jointly signed this Monday a statement for the Government to apply the European Regulation on Freedom of the Media and resume the project Organic law for the protection of professional secrecy of Journalism approved in 2022.
The signatories are the Federation of Associations of Journalists of Spain (FAPE), the groups of journalists from CCOO and of UGTthe Federation of Journalists’ Unions (FeSP), the Col.legi de Periodistes de CataloniaProfessional Association of Xornalists of Galiciathe Network of Professional Colleges of Journalists, the Association of Parliamentary Journalists (APP) and Reporters Without Borders (RSF).
In this note, they join so that the Government listens to them and launch, in Spain, the application of the European Regulation on Freedom of the Mediain addition to the processing of the Law of professional secrecy of Journalism.
Also, They have requested a meeting with Félix BolañosMinister of the Presidency, Justice and Relations with the Courts, and with Ernest UrtasunMinister of Culture, for the implementation of said European Regulation, since journalist organizations consider that The Government must have their opinions for this.
The European Regulation on Freedom of the Media was approved by the European Commission in October 2022 and by European Parliamenton March 13 of this same year. EU States must comply with it compulsorily starting August 8, 2025, with nuances according to the article of the Regulation.
It aims increase the protection of journalism professionals and group the media that provide a public service. When it was approvedBrussels stated that this law also “requires that the allocation of state advertising to the media is transparent, objective, proportionate and non-discriminatory”.
In exchange for these conditions, the media have to keep in mind some principles of transparency and independence which the European Commission explained when the Law was approved.
On the other hand, on the Professional Secrecy Law of Journalismin December 2022, the FAPEthe groups of journalists from CCOO and UGT and the FeSP They reached an agreement with the Government for its regulationwhich aims to The journalist cannot be persecuted for protecting the identity of his sourcesbut this bill was paralyzed.

On the other hand, the unions are also going to demand the processing of the draft Organic Law for the protection of the professional secrecy of Journalismpublished in the Official Gazette of the Cortes Generales on December 22, 2022, and with which they obtained the commitment of all parliamentary groups.
This bill was paralyzed when the Cortes was dissolvedHowever, FAPE and the Forum of Journalist Organizations – together with the Network of Professional Colleges of Journalists and Reporters without Borders – have requested, in this legislature, meetings with these congressional groups to highlight the importance and need for their support.
