The historic Canarian socialist leader José Miguel Pérez has died at the age of 67, after a long period battling cancer, as confirmed to EFE sources close to the politician
Pérez had a degree in Philosophy and Letters, doctor in History from the University of La Laguna (ULL) and professor of Contemporary History at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC).
His political career began in 2003 when he led the candidacy for the Cabildo of Gran Canaria for the PSC-PSOE after being elected secretary of the PSOE in Gran Canaria. After this appointment with the polls, he became a councilor of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria until 2007 when he was elected president of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria.
Likewise, in March 2010 it would reach the General Secretariat of the PSOE of the Canary Islandsto be a year later the socialist candidate for the Presidency of the Government of the Canary Islands and after an agreement with the Canary Coalition he entered the regional Executive as vice president and Minister of Education.
Ángel Víctor Torres Pérez, Secretary General of the PSOE in the Canary Islands said goodbye to him with some warm words: “He was a generous and fair politician, who helped me a lot. I will be infinitely grateful to you. May the earth be light to you, my friend. “All my condolences to his family.”
