In August 2022, compared to the previous month, employed and unemployed decreased, while the inactive increased. Istat notes it. The decline in employment (-0.3%, equal to -74 thousand) is observed for men and women, for all employees and age groups, with the sole exception of 15-24 year-olds for whom it remains stable; employment among the self-employed is on the rise. The employment rate drops to 60.0% (-0.2 points).
The number of job seekers decreases (-1.6%, equal to -31 thousand units compared to July) among males and children under 35. The total unemployment rate drops to 7.8% (-0.1 points), the youth rate to 21.2% (-1.9 points).
The increase in the number of inactive between 15 and 64 years (+ 0.7%, equal to + 91 thousand units) is transversal by gender and age. The inactivity rate rises to 34.8% (+0.3 points).
Comparing the quarter June-August 2022 with the previous one (March-May 2022), there is an increase in the number of employees of 85 thousand units, equal to 0.4%. The growth in employment recorded in the quarterly comparison is associated with the decrease in both job seekers (-3.7%, equal to -76 thousand units), and inactive people (-0.1%, equal to -19 thousand units) .
The number of employees in August 2022 exceeds that of August 2021 by 1.8% (+ 406 thousand units). The increase involves both sexes and all age groups, with the exception of the 35-49 year-olds, among whom the employed decrease due to the demographic dynamics; the employment rate, increasing by 1.5 percentage points, in fact rises even among 35-49 year-olds (+0.7 points) because, in this age group, the decrease in the number of employed people is less marked than that of the population overall.
Compared to August 2021, the number of job seekers decreases (-14.1%, equal to -319 thousand units) and the number of inactive persons aged between 15 and 64 years (-2.6%, equal to -344 thousand) , concludes Istat.
