The regional derby this Saturday (Palacio de los Deportes de Murcia, 12:00 pm) starts at full speed. Jimbee Cartagena will make the signing of Paulo Roberto official this Wednesday, initially as institutional relations, the name ‘Regional Wave’ advanced. The Spanish-Brazilian was one of the great futsal phenomena worldwide and became the flagship of ElPozo, where he is considered an absolute legend. The pivot starred in numerous clashes with the Cartagena fans in the past, until he was escorted out of the old ‘Bombonera’ in one of the hot derbies of the early 21st century.
Paulo Roberto has always considered that his relationship with the Cartagena fans is one of love-hate, having lived very intensely the derbies that were disputed with three thousand people in the old ‘Bombonera’. On March 20, 2000, the Spanish-Brazilian effusively celebrated his goals at the Mínguez Saéz-ElPozo (5-6): his provocation led the stands to explode and respond by throwing objects onto the track .
On one occasion, Paulo Roberto had to leave escorted by police officers due to the monumental anger of the staff; and in the semifinals for the league title, in the 2004/05 season, he threw water at the stands of the Central Pavilion where the families of the local players were. The game was stopped for many minutes due to that action by the Brazilian, who years before had to leave the ‘Bombonera’ hiding in the trunk of the then Sports Councilor Alonso Gómez López.
“Gasoline on Fire”
The Spanish-Brazilian was one of the best futsal players in history, with the permission of Falcao and Manoel Tobías. Star of this sport from 1988 to 2005 and total benchmark of an ElPozo [capitaneado por el actual entrenador del Jimbee, Duda] of legend. The eternal ‘7’ of the butcher set always stood out for his voracious appetite, insatiable hunger and born competitor, hence his famous run-ins with the Cartagena stands.
“I was the villain, the bad guy who went there wanting to shut them up, although deep down what I wanted was to listen to them. Not everyone manages to play in front of such involved fans. I was one of those who liked to dance and put on music, like put gasoline on the fire”, assured the ‘7’ of ElPozo in 2020, in an interview with ‘Efesista’.
The most media figure in the history of ElPozo lifted five titles in Murcia, scored 492 goals (an unattainable figure) and was the competition’s top scorer five times. He still holds the record for goals scored by a player in the same match: the nine he scored against Sol Fuerza in 1997.
Criticism on social networks
In the summer of 2009, Paulo Roberto put an end to fifteen years in the delicatessen group through the back door, when he concluded his period as sports director. Numerous Jimbee Cartagena fans criticized the club’s decision yesterday, on social networks, precisely because of all that controversial past. In the melon team, Paulo Roberto will meet again with Duda: the current coach from Cartagena is also a living history of ElPozo, a club he led for 17 seasons with 15 titles won.
“He celebrated the goals effusively and is a world ambassador for futsal, with an excellent relationship with companies, players, federations and sports brands. It is something strategic for the entity for all that his figure in futsal entails,” he argued to the regarding the Jimbee’s manager, Roberto Sánchez, to questions from THE TRUTH.
