The Nikkei newspaper reported on Saturday that Japan and the European Union plan to begin talks on cooperation in advanced materials used in making next-generation chips and batteries in an effort to reduce dependence on China.
Creating a dialogue framework of this kind in areas of common interest would benefit both sides, EU Commissioner for Innovation and Research Ileana Ivanova told the Nikkei daily in a written interview.
The Nikkei reported that the dialogue framework, which will be launched in April in response to the European Union, aims to help reduce dependence on China for materials such as rare earths, which are key components used in making electric car batteries.
